Working in a Rural Area

Here is a very good video from the Rural Health Initiative of Doctors about the life of doctors working in a rural area in South Africa.

What I am interested in knowing is whether professionals from any field (doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers) are interested in working in rural areas.

What would motivate you to work in a place like this?
What is attractive about working in rural places?
What is not attractive about working here?

I'm really curious and would appreciate it if you could also tell me what has been done, in the countries you live in, to attract more professionals to rural areas and what has been successful and what hasn't worked out well.

If you are someone already working in a rural area, please share your experiences here. Why did you decide to work there? What's wonderful about it as well as what would make living there more enjoyable and attractive.

The question that occurs to me whilst watching that film clip is not an answer to any of your questions; rather it is

"Why WOULDN'T you work somewhere you will absolutely make a difference to people's lives; somewhere you are likely to be their single best chance at surviving or dying; somewhere you will likely have your heart ripped out, trampled on, shoved back and slapped together ... and yet, feel on top of the world for having been the hero of the hour?"

If one ever wanted to feel like their choices in life were ratified, then perhaps being a Bush Doctor is it. Who knows, perhaps one would grow to love it!

Loved the clip, thanks. But I have one question: apart from you, Amanzimtoti and Dr Bongi, are there any South African doctors left in SA, or do they all come from the UK??!!!!! ;)

Actually you just answered some of my questions...working here can REALLY make an absolute difference, and be exhilarating at the same time!

Lol there are many South African docs, we the few who blog. Blogging not very popular here. Unfortunately, this was the only video I could get of docs working in a rural area and it focused on docs from overseas, lol maybe I should go out and film some SA docs in action at rural areas and upload it :-)
